New River Stage Presents Treasure Island
Swab the deck and prepare to sail the high seas as New River Stage presents “Treasure Island” by Bryony Lavery. This reimagined production of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s classic tale is a story of the cleverness of children. While often pegged as a story for boys, this retelling balances the gender scale while staying true to the original narrative. Jim Hawkins becomes Jimima, a young girl fighting both the rules of society and bloodthirsty pirates. The show runs April 28, 29 and May 5, 6. Tickets are available online at newriverstage.org or by phone at 540-585-4295. The addition of female pirates adds more historical accuracy to the tale. “When I read ‘Treasure Island’ as a girl it was always sold as a story for boys. This is a great way to correct that and make it a story for everyone,” said director AJ Moose “Treasure Island” will mark the New River Stage debut for Abigail Witt (Jim Hawkins) and Brian Pierce (Long John Silver) and features local surgeon Dr. Keith Stephenson (Billy Bones). Climb aboard aboard the Hispaniola for a heart-pounding voyage filled with tales of swashbuckling men and women o’ fortune, a malicious mutiny led by infamous Long John Silver, and a deadly quest for fabled buried booty.
